What Are Hydrocarbon Refrigerants?

Hydrocarbon refrigerants are naturally occurring, non-toxic organic compounds primarily consisting of hydrogen and carbon. Unlike chemically synthesized fluorocarbons (CFCs, HCFCs, Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and HFOs), hydrocarbons have been a fundamental part of the earth's natural ecosystem for millions of years.

In thermodynamics, hydrocarbons like propane (R290) and isobutane (R600a) exhibit vastly superior heat transfer characteristics. When highly purified and formulated into proprietary blends like the Engas product range, these gases become incredibly efficient refrigerants. To achieve the same heat transfer, up to 62% less refrigerant volume is required. This results in lower discharge operating pressures, reduced demand on the compressor and lower electricity usage.

Because they are 100% natural, Engas hydrocarbon refrigerants possess a near-zero Global Warming Potential (GWP of less than 1) and zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP). With an atmospheric lifetime of less than one year — compared to 28.2 years for R410a. Engas is the permanent, future-proof solution to global HCF's refrigerant phase-downs.

Critical Temperature Advantage

Chemical refrigerants have a lower critical temperature — the temperature at which refrigerant gas will not condense back to liquid in the vapour compression cycle. During hot weather, temperatures within an air conditioner may reach or exceed this limit, resulting in decreased cooling performance and increased electricity consumption at the exact time cooling is most needed.

The critical temperature of Engas M60 is 90°C — meaning performance does not diminish in hot weather. This is a fundamental advantage for regions with high ambient temperatures, where conventional chemical refrigerants lose efficiency when they are needed most.

Retro-fit Performance Data

Engas natural refrigerants deliver significantly higher refrigerant effect per kilogram. For example, Engas M60 delivers 435 kJ/kg compared to just 115 kJ/kg for R410a — nearly four times the cooling work per unit of refrigerant. This means less refrigerant mass flow is required, resulting in lower pressures and less electrical draw.

The lower operating discharge pressure reduces the work the compressor has to do, reducing wear and tear and extending the life of the compressor, pipework, joints, hoses, fittings and other components. This reduces the likelihood of leaks, minimising replacement refrigerant costs, equipment downtime and direct greenhouse emissions.
